Okay how many of you guys have taught a parent, grandparent, etc. how to use a computer?
So far I have taught partly my mother, but mainly my grandparents. I gotta tell you its pretty funny especially when my grandpa yells at the computer when he hears "you got mail" or something like that. It makes you feel smart or important right?! Or is that just me? hmmmm well either way it's pretty cool finally teaching them for once! After all our world now is nothing but technology!

Well, its pretty annoying to teach people how to do certain stuff on a computer. It frustrates me even more as of how slow they are! I only like teaching people math and physics.

Oh well, when I saw this thread, I thought it was about being teachers in general.
I have pretty much made my entire family computer literate single-handedly, and I say that with justifiable pride. My parents and my grandfather know how to use the computer for general use due to the efforts I have put behind them!

I taught my mom bhow to avoid getting scammed online. The info seems old hat to me, but then I remembered how I ended up losing some money in online schememes that were too good to be true in the past.
Remembering your lack of experience at one time helps when teaching others. We were all n00bs at something.

I've tought my sister and mother and I don't plan on teaching ever again. Teaching people who can't even handle the mouse to use a computer is just frustrating.

I've only had the experience of teaching two boyfriends. Both were a pair of idiots and one was easier to teach than the other.

I teach martial arts every week in class. In this case, I don't ever get impatient and also learn at the same time when showing a technique or move. When I teach family how to use a computer, I get very impatient and sometimes regret being frustrated at them.

Grandparents are a hell of a student when it comes to teaching them how to use computer. Well, I think the fruit of my hard work is already showing 'cause it is so cool to play "DOTA" with your grand paps. Yeah this is true. At first my friends thought that I am just bluffing until they finally seen my grandpa playing the game and starting to kick their asses for a "triple kill".

I have taught quite a few of my family members how to use computers. One sister in law in particular, I showed her how to use Excel, how to create a spread sheet, how to create and enter formulas, etc. I created a spreadsheet for her to use at work, which she then told her boss she created it, got a promotion and is now the manager of the office! She finally has the hang of how to do things on the computer, and what she doesn't understand, she has a 17 year old son that helps her with stuff.
The easiest way for me to help family members to understand is to create 'See Spot Run' type of notes for them to fall back on when they are at the computer. Computers have come a long way! I started using computers when you had to do a back up on a reel to reel! (That was the work computer)

I've never done this. If I have kids, I will most likely teach them, apart from that, I don't see who else I would teach.

Yes, I have been in the position of teaching my older family members how to use the computer (usually to play games) and right now, I am teaching my mom and aunt how to surf the internet and hopefully help them earn a few pennies online. LOL.
As I teach, by profession, it comes naturally and I do enjoy seeing their progress...there are days though, that I just do not have the patience (as I just need to switch off from everything).
All in all, it is a good feeling to see others progress...and they are open to change, which is vital in today's day and age.
